In our role as Support Engineers for web hosts, this is a common error we see in Drupal websites.

We’ve seen this happen during:

• Drupal core update,
• Module or Theme update,
• Website feature additions (code update),
• PHP upgrade or reconfiguration,
• Web server (eg. Apache) updates,
• Website migration, or
• New website setup

What is Drupal 500 internal server error?

500 Internal Server Error is a web server’s way of saying, “Something has gone wrong when I tried to display the page. Not sure what.”

Almost always it means that there is a configuration error in either the web server settings, PHP settings or website settings.

Some of these errors are temporary (eg. due to resource limits), and might go away when you refresh the site.

But if it doesn’t, it might indeed be a server issue.

How to troubleshoot Drupal error 500

The standard way to troubleshoot error 500 is to analyze the web server log files.

An error log might look something like this:

[Thu Jul 19 11:01:33.126782 2018] [:error] [pid 31931] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 1048576 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 17120 bytes) in /var/www/drupal7/includes/module.inc on line 503

It won’t make much sense if you aren’t a developer.

So, let’s see what else can be done.

Troubleshooting using error display in Drupal

All web hosts supress PHP errors by default.

So, when there’s an Error 500, you’re not likely to see the reason on the site.

However, you can enable error reporting by adding these lines in index.php.

ini_set('display_startup_errors', TRUE);

And when the page is refreshed, you may see an error such as this:

Again, that one can also be a bit difficult to understand if you aren’t a Drupal developer.

Drupal error 500 troubleshooting for humans

For those who do not want a PhD in Drupal, and wants this error fixed, we’ll list here the most common causes for this error, and how to fix them.

1. Misconfigured .htaccess

The number one reason we’ve seen for this error is incompatibility of .htaccess settings with the server environment.

Some hosting accounts will be set to single site environment, while others will be set to multi-site.

Some will allow directory listing and soft links, while others may not.

But Drupal packages and installation instructions assume a basic set of hosting settings to be present.

We’ve seen enabling or disabling these settings (differs from one server to another) can fix this error:

RewriteBase /
Options -Multiviews
Options +FollowSymLinks
Options -Indexes

Comment (by adding a #) or uncomment these settings one by one to see if it’ll clear the error.

If it is an error with .htaccess, that should fix it.

2. PHP configuration errors

The next big source of error is PHP config issues.

We’ve seen this range from un-installed PHP extensions & wrong PHP paths to incorrect PHP.ini & obsolete PHP handlers.

By default, Drupal requires these PHP extensions to function, but misconfigurations can prevent access to these libraries.

• OpenSSL
• Curl
• GD
• PDO
• XML
• JSON
• Mbstring

In addition to these modules, PHP also requires certain PHP settings to be set right.

For eg. “allow_url_fopen”, “magic_quotes_gpc”, and “register_globals” needs to be set to “off”.

We’ve seen cases where this is either not set right, or the website uses an incorrect version of php.ini, that had the settings configured wrong.

To fix this, we use a two step method:

• Verify PHP config path – We check if the PHP handler, PHP program file, and the PHP configuration file are all set correctly.
• Verify PHP settings – We then look at the settings to make sure everything is as per Drupal’s requirement doc.

3. Resource limits

In VPS and Shared hosting servers, a big cause of errors is the memory limit.

Drupal core only requires 32 MB of memory to execute, and most hosting accounts provide a minimum of 128 MB or 256 MB of memory for Drupal processes.

However, when modules are added, the memory requirement of Drupal processes can exceed the allocated quota. The operating system will kill such processes, and the visitor gets a 500 error.

Here’s one way that we’ve seen to be working for many:

• Login to your FTP account.
• Download .htaccess file.
• Add the line php_value memory_limit 512M in the file, and save
• Re-upload the file.

4. File ownership or permission errors

Site migrations or new site setup can be hard.

A lot of settings need to be changed to make an app compatible to the new environment.

We’ve seen file and folder permissions set wrong in Drupal installations, causing the PHP execution to fail.

The right permissions for files is 644 and folders is 755.

If you see anywhere in the log files that the permissions (user, group, world) is not set right, these commands could help:

find /home/USERNAME/public_html -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find /home/USERNAME/public_html -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

Replace /home/USERNAME/public_html with the path to your web directory.

You might also do this from an admin front-end (if you are provided with one).

Warning : Take a backup of your site before you execute any command.

5. Errors in Drupal modules or themes

Not all modules are created equal.

Some have code errors, like a missing “;” or a wrong module path.

We’ve seen Drupal sites go down after an upgrade, or a code update, or a backup restore.

In such cases, you can disable the Drupal modules and themes one by one to find out which one caused the error.

A faster way is to analyze the log files and figure out the error’s origin. Here at Bobcares, that’s our favored method, and helps us resolve issues within minutes.

6. Web server or FastCGI config issues

Many settings in webservers can conflict with each other.

For eg. since Apache 2.2, the config option “SymLinksIfOwnerMatch” is available that is more secure than the older “FollowSymLinks”.

We’ve seen sites where both these options are enabled in .htaccess, causing the site to fail.

This usually happens after a migration where the site owner tries to retain the old settings while adding the new ones.

Similarly, FastCGI has many limits such as Process Execution Time, Request Length, etc. which we’ve found to limit Drupal execution.

In such cases, there are no cookie-cutter solutions. We follow the log trail, find out what the conflicts are, and fix the offending setting.

7. Stale cache, security settings, and others

Temporary issues like resource bottlenecks or server load can cause Drupal error 500.

But the Drupal or server cache will store them for a while more even after the error has passed.

So, in many cases, we’ve solved the issue just by clearing the cache.

Similarly, we’ve seen this error displayed when a script execution is blocked by a firewall such as mod_security.

In such cases, we identify which exact security rule is being triggered and add an exemption for that site.

More causes for Drupal error 500

There can be way more reasons such as Database errors, Brute force attacks, etc. for this error to happen.

1. Open Task Manager:

• Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, or
• Press Ctrl + Alt + Del, or
• Right-click the Taskbar and select “Task Manager” (not available in Windows 11)

1. In Task Manager:

• Click “More details” if you see the compact version
• Ensure you’re in the “Processes” tab
• Find the application that was using the file
• Select the process and click “End task”

4. Change File Explorer Process Settings

1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E)
2. In Windows 10:

• Go to View > Options > Change folder and search options

1. In Windows 11:

• Click the three-dot “See more” icon next to View
• Select “Options”

1. In the Folder Options window:

• Switch to the “View” tab
• Find “Launch folder windows in a separate process”
• Ensure it’s unchecked
• Click “Apply” to save changes

5. Disable the File Explorer Preview Pane

1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E)
2. In Windows 10:

• Switch to the “View” tab
• Press Alt + P to close the preview pane

• Go to View > Show
• If “Preview pane” is checked, click to uncheck it

6. Force Delete via Command Prompt

1. Locate the file path in File Explorer
2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
3. Navigate to the file directory:

   cd [directory path]

4. Temporarily kill File Explorer:

• Open Task Manager
• Find “Windows Explorer”
• Right-click and select “End task”

4. In Command Prompt, enter:

6. Restart File Explorer:

• In Task Manager, go to File > Run new task
• Enter explorer.exe and click OK

Using Specialized Tools

If manual methods don’t work, try these tools:

1. Microsoft Process Explorer

• Download from Microsoft’s website
• Use “Find > Find Handle or DLL” to search for the file
• Close the offending application using Process Explorer or Task Manager

2. Unlocker

• Launch Unlocker and browse for the file
• Select the file and click “OK”
• Choose to Delete, Rename, or Move the file

3. LockHunter

• Adds itself to the Windows context menu
• Right-click the locked file and select “What is locking this file”
• Choose to Unlock, Delete, or Unlock & Rename

Last Resort: Boot Into Safe Mode

If all else fails:

1. Enter Windows Advanced Startup:

• Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now
• Windows 11: Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now

1. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart
2. Select Safe Mode from the Startup Settings screen
3. Try deleting the file in Safe Mode

When your (CPT) custom post type not showing in tag archive You need to follow a few steps to solve that.

The Situation

I created a Custom Post Type, which, from here I will call CPT, using the CPT UI plugin. Please note that in this case it doesn’t matter which plugin you use to create that CPT. It could also have been Pods or Toolset.

Connected taxonomies I set to include the default WordPress categories and tags:

… and then my tag links just didn’t show the tutorials with the tags. They only showed regular posts.

Steps to solve it

1. Add the code snippet below to your functions.php. Either in a child theme, or if you don’t have a child theme, I recommend you install a free plugin called Code Snippets, and put it there.
2. Where the code says custom_post_type, replace that with the name of your own custom post type.

Let’s try to fix Laravel error Failed to clear cache. Make sure you have the appropriate permissions’ Laravel is a powerful PHP framework that simplifies the development process by providing an elegant syntax and a rich set of features. Despite ensuring proper permissions for the storage and bootstrap/cache directories, the problem persisted. After several attempts to fix the issue, including changing ownership and permissions, I discovered that the root cause was a missing directory: storage/framework/cache/data.

The Solution

In a fresh installation of Laravel, the data directory under storage/framework/cache does not exist by default. This can lead to issues when Laravel attempts to clear the cache, as it relies on the data directory to store temporary cache files. If this directory is missing, Laravel cannot perform the cache-clearing operation, resulting in the error message mentioned above.

The Solution for Error Failed to clear cache. Make sure you have the appropriate permissions

Step 1: Create the Missing Data Directory

To resolve the issue, you need to create the data directory manually. You can do this using the terminal:

mkdir -p storage/framework/cache/data

This command creates the data directory at the specified path. The -p option ensures that any parent directories are created as needed.

Step 2: Verify Directory Permissions

After creating the directory, it’s crucial to ensure that the web server has the appropriate permissions to read and write to it. You can set the necessary permissions using the following command:

chmod -R 775 storage/framework/cache

This command sets the permissions for the cache directory and its subdirectories to allow the web server user to read and write files.

Step 3: Clear the Cache Again

With the data directory now in place, you can attempt to clear the cache again:

php artisan cache:clear

This time, the command should execute successfully without any errors, allowing you to proceed with your development work.

‘Antimalware Service Executable’ (MsMpEng.exe) is a core component of Windows Defender, which is responsible for real-time protection against malware on Windows systems. However, it can sometimes cause high CPU usage, leading to system slowdowns. If you’re experiencing high CPU usage due to this process, here are several methods you can use to fix or mitigate the issue.

1. Change Windows Defender’s Scheduled Scans

One of the most common reasons for high CPU usage by Antimalware Service Executable is that it’s performing a scan. You can adjust its scan schedule to run during times when you are not using the computer.

Steps:

1. Open Task Scheduler:
   • Press Windows + R, type taskschd.msc, and hit Enter.
2. Navigate to Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Windows Defender.
3. In the right panel, find Windows Defender Scheduled Scan.
4. Right-click and select Properties.
5. Go to the Conditions tab and uncheck the options under Idle, Power, and Network. This prevents the scan from running when you’re using your computer.
6. Set a specific time for the scan under the Triggers tab when your PC is less likely to be in use.

2. Disable Real-Time Protection

If Windows Defender’s real-time protection is consuming too many resources, you can temporarily disable it. However, this could leave your system vulnerable, so be sure to re-enable it or use another antivirus program.

Steps:

1. Open Windows Security:
   • Press Windows + I to open Settings, then go to Update & Security > Windows Security.

3. Exclude Windows Defender from Scanning Its Own Directory

Steps:

   • Go to Virus & Threat Protection > Manage settings.
2. Scroll down and click Add or remove exclusions.
3. Click Add an exclusion, then select Folder.
4. Navigate to: C:\Program Files\Windows Defender

4. Limit Windows Defender’s CPU Usage via Group Policy

You can limit the amount of CPU that Windows Defender uses during scans using Group Policy (for Windows Pro/Enterprise users) or through a Registry tweak (for Windows Home users).

Via Group Policy (for Pro/Enterprise):

1. Open Group Policy Editor:
   • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and hit Enter.
2. Navigate to:
   Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus > Scan
3. Find Specify the maximum CPU usage during a scan.

Via Registry Editor (for Home):

   • Press Windows + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.

3. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value named AvgCPULoadFactor.
4. Set the value to the percentage of CPU you want to allow (e.g., 50 for 50%).

5. Use Third-Party Antivirus

If the high CPU usage persists and is interfering with your work, consider using a third-party antivirus solution. Some alternative antivirus programs are lighter on system resources than Windows Defender.

Steps:

1. Install a trusted third-party antivirus program such as Avast, Bitdefender, or Kaspersky.
2. Disable Windows Defender:
   • After installing the new antivirus, Windows Defender should automatically disable itself. If it doesn’t, follow these steps:
   • Go to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and disable Real-time protection.

6. Update Windows and Drivers

Sometimes, high CPU usage by Antimalware Service Executable can be due to an outdated version of Windows or drivers.

Steps:

1. Update Windows:

   • Click the three dots at the top right corner and select Settings.

   • Scroll down to Privacy and security and click Security.
3. Adjust Safe Browsing:
   • Under Safe Browsing, you can choose No protection to disable all warnings, but this isn’t recommended for general use. Instead, opt for Standard protection and manually allow specific sites.
4. Allow Downloaded Files:
   • If Chrome has blocked a download, you’ll see a warning at the bottom of the screen. Click on Keep dangerous file to allow the download (only do this if you’re confident the file is safe).

Mozilla Firefox

1. Open Firefox Settings:
   • Click the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top right and select Settings.
2. Privacy & Security:
   • Navigate to Privacy & Security from the left-hand menu.
3. Disable Block Dangerous Downloads:
   • Scroll down to Security and uncheck the option labeled Block dangerous and deceptive content. You can also opt to customize blocking by excluding certain types of content.
4. Bypass Download Blocking:
   • If Firefox blocks a file during download, you’ll see an option to Allow the file on the download bar or pop-up. Choose this option if you’re sure the file is safe.

Microsoft Edge

1. Open Edge Settings:
   • Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
2. Go to Privacy, Search, and Services:
   • In the left menu, click on Privacy, search, and services.
3. Adjust Tracking Prevention:
   • Under Tracking prevention, choose the Balanced or Basic level to reduce the number of blocked sites.
4. Download Files Anyway:
   • If a download is blocked, you can click Show all and choose Keep for files you believe are safe.

3. Whitelisting a Site in Antivirus or Firewall Software

Your antivirus software or firewall may block certain downloads, especially if they are from unfamiliar sources. To whitelist a site or unblock a download:

For Windows Defender:

1. Open Windows Security:
   • Search for Windows Security in the Start menu and open it.
2. Go to Virus & Threat Protection:
   • Click on Virus & threat protection.
3. Manage Ransomware Protection:
   • Scroll down to Ransomware protection and click on Manage ransomware protection.
4. Allow a Site or App:
   • Under Controlled folder access, click Allow an app through controlled folder access and add the site or download manager you are using.

For Third-Party Antivirus (Norton, McAfee, etc.):

1. Open the Antivirus Dashboard:
   • Launch the antivirus software from your system tray or Start menu.
2. Navigate to Web Protection or Firewall Settings:
   • Look for settings that manage web protection, firewalls, or download controls.
3. Add an Exception:
   • Find the section for adding exceptions or exclusions and manually add the site’s URL or the file download manager to the allowed list.

4. Check and Adjust Router/Network Settings

If you’re using a network with custom settings, such as a workplace or school, the router or network might be blocking downloads from certain sites. Here’s what you can do:

1. Log into Your Router:
   • Open a browser and type in your router’s IP address (commonly 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). You’ll need the admin credentials for the router.
2. Find Web Filtering Settings:
   • Look for sections like Web filtering, Security, or Content control.
3. Whitelist the Website:
   • Add the website URL to a whitelist or allowed sites list.
4. Restart Your Router:
   • Once you’ve made the changes, restart the router to apply the new settings.

5. Use a VPN to Bypass Network Restrictions

If the site is blocked by your ISP or network administrator, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) can help bypass these restrictions by masking your IP address and encrypting your internet traffic.

Here’s how to use a VPN:

1. Choose a VPN Service:
   • There are many VPN services available, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost.
2. Download and Install the VPN:
   • Follow the setup process for your chosen VPN service.
3. Connect to a Different Server:

Here’s how to use a download manager:

1. Install the Download Manager:
   • Download and install one of the programs mentioned above.
2. Copy the Download Link:
   • Right-click the download link on the blocked website and copy it.
3. Paste the Link into the Download Manager:
   • Open the download manager, paste the link, and start the download.

7. Consult Your Network Administrator

If you’re in a controlled network (such as at work or school), the network administrator might have intentionally blocked certain websites. In this case, you can:

• Contact your network admin: Request access to the site if it’s work or education-related.
